Being bilingual does not mean that you have to speak multiple languages fluently. You can be bilingual in a lot of different ways. Some bilinguals grew up speaking two languages from birth. Others learn a new language later in life. Some use two languages all the time while others use one language more often. All of these people are bilinguals! I study how these different people understand language and how they speak multiple languages. I am especially interested in the way bilinguals can switch between the languages they speak!
-
My Typical Day:
My days are really varied, one of the things I like about my job! Some days I am busy with teaching while other days I do more research work, for example analysing data of a new study. All days usually include talking to a lot of different people, both colleagues and students, to discuss new ideas.
-
What I'd do with the prize money:
I would love to use the prize money to learn more about bilingual schools in the UK. There are many bilingual children in the UK and I would use the money to engage with bilingual children and their parents and teachers and to understand the type of research they think is important for us to do.
