I am a researcher in psychology. My broad area of interest is Cognitive Psychology, which relates to everything that happens in our mind and our behaviour. I am particularly interested in how we learn and remember things, and how this is affected by things like anxiety. I run experiments to answer these questions. Experiments probably conjure up an image of a dark basement with a laboratory where someone is inventing nefarious potions. However, in practice this means that I ask people to do fairly repetitive tasks on the computer.
-
My Typical Day:
My typical day involves answering a lot of emails, teaching, writing and attending meetings.
-
What I'd do with the prize money:
I would probably use it to cover travel costs to go to a local school and demonstrate some of my experiments, as well as talking about a career in research.

My Interview
-
What did you want to be after you left school?
I was really unsure, but I knew that I liked psychology and was good at it.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Not really, I always liked to follow the rules, though liked to challenge things that seemed unfair, which I'm sure annoyed my teachers at times.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
My passion is music, so perhaps I would pursue that.
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Lizzo!
What's your favourite food?
Ice-cream
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
Better work-life balance, the happiness of my friends, end to violence
Tell us a joke.
Not a joke, but in my last lecture, I made an unfortunate spelling mistake when discussing "shift work".
